A client from Garner, North Carolina, brought his 2015 Toyota Tundra to Adrenaline Autosound in search of a dramatic audio system upgrade. After talking to the client, we had a clear understanding of his intentions. We designed an audio upgrade solution that would sound amazing without impeding the usable space or functionality of the vehicle. With his approval, we scheduled an appointment to start this Tundra audio system upgrade project.
Head Unit Integration and Signal Processing
To use the factory head unit with the aftermarket system, we installed a JL Audio FiX-82 processor under the front passenger seat. The FiX-82 provides a clean, coherent signal that we can use to feed the system. The next component in the signal chain is a JL Audio TwK-D8 processor. The TwK-D8 is also under the passenger seat, and we used a TOSLINK cable to connect it to the FiX 82.
System Amplification
We stuck with JL Audio for amplification for this system. We installed an XD600/6v2 amplifier to power the midrange and high-frequency speakers, and an XD600/1v2 to power the subwoofers. JL Audio ECS Blue interconnects feed analog signals from the TwK D8 processor to the amplifiers. We fused the amplifiers with a JL Audio XD-FDBU-2 fused distribution block.
Stealthy Subwoofer Enclosure
A key aspect of the system design was to ensure we did not take up any usable space in the truck. We called on JL Audio once again for one of their Tundra-specific Stealthbox subwoofer enclosures. The SB-T-TUNDB3/10TW3/BK includes a pair of 10TW3-D4 subwoofers and is virtually invisible once installed under the rear seat.
Premium Speaker Solution
We chose the industry-leading Audiofrog brand for their GS60 woofer and a GS10 tweeter sets. We mounted the GS60 woofers on HDPE adapter plates that we created in-house. The use of HDPE allows us to mount the speakers with 8-32 hex head cap screws without the need for inserts.
As with all of our installations, we treated the doors to proper sound-deadening and a set of acoustic coupling rings. We mounted the tweeters using the hardware provided by Audiofrog. A set of high-current quick-disconnects ensures that servicing anything in the door is easy and reliable.
We wrapped all of the wiring in Tesa cloth tape to prevent vibrations. A set of GS62 coaxial speakers in the rear doors serve as rear fill for the system.
Tundra Audio System Tuning and Delivery
We completed the installation by configuring the DSP with our RTA and calibrated microphone. The result was a system that exceeded our expectations and thoroughly impressed the customer.
