A client from Raleigh recently visited Adrenaline Autosound to discuss options for upgrading his 2018 Jeep Wrangler audio system. He expressed that the factory-installed stereo didn’t play loudly enough to overcome road and wind noise while the top was off and that the system didn’t offer an overall pleasant tonal balance. After inspecting this fourth-generation JL chassis code Jeep, we came up with a plan to upgrade the speakers and subwoofer and add an amplifier to provide the performance the client wanted.
Audiofrog GS-Series Speaker Upgrade
At the heart of many of our upgrades are Audiofrog GB-Series speakers. These speakers not only offer exceptional clarity, but they are also built to be able to handle large amounts of power so that the system can be played at high volumes.
We mounted a GB40 4-inch midrange in the factory speaker enclosure in the dash of the Jeep and a second set in the overhead sound bar. Next, we created a set of ABS plastic mounting adapters to fit a pair of GB15 1.5-inch tweeters in the factory speaker locations on the top of the dash. A set of GB10 tweeters accompanies the mids in the overhead sound bar.
We used the larger GB15 tweeters in the dash so we could set them to produce more midrange information and help bring the soundstage to the windshield.
JL Audio Subwoofer Solution
Our plan to provide excellent bass in the Jeep involved the installation of a JL Audio 10TW3-4 10-inch subwoofer in the factory enclosure on the right side of the cargo area. We created a mounting adapter for the subwoofer that mimics the shape of the sub to give the upgrade a factory-installed look.
Jeep Wrangler Audio System Amplifier Solution
The key to the success of this system was in the JL Audio VX800/8i eight-channel amplifier we used to power the front and rear speakers. This 75-watt per channel amplifier includes a 10-channel digital signal processor that we used to configure the crossovers for each speaker and set the output level, signal delay and equalization curves for each driver. The result is that each speaker is optimized for its position in the truck and produces smooth and natural sound for the client.
We added an XD300/1v2 300-watt amp to drive the subwoofer. The sub amp is fed from a processed output from the VXi amp. This processing allows us to optimize the subwoofer frequency response.
We added one of the new JL Audio DRC-205 remote level controls to the VXi amp to allow the client to fine tune the bass level or load different presets into the signal processor.
Jeep Wrangler Sound System Upgrade
After a few days of work, the Jeep Wrangler audio system was ready to be delivered back to the client. He was impressed with the way we had integrated everything into the vehicle to make it look like it came from the factory. The sound was exactly what he wanted – clear and detailed, even at high volume levels.
