A returning Adrenaline Autosound client from Wilson recently inquired about upgrading the stereo system in his new 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4. The client envisioned having the dealership deliver the car to us to complete the upgrades before taking possession of the vehicle. After several conversations, we created a plan to provide an audio system with dramatically improved dynamic range, accuracy, low-frequency extension and output capability.
Audiofrog Speakers for Porsche Cayman Audio Upgrade
As we do for all our clients who strive for the most accurate and detailed audio systems available, we proposed upgrading the speakers in the vehicle with Audiofrog GB-Series components. We created the necessary mounting adapters out of ½-inch HDPE plastic to install the new speakers securely in the factory speaker locations. We also implemented acoustic coupling rings on the door woofers to help focus the output into the vehicle cabin.
The dash is now home to a set of GB10 1-inch tweeters and GB40 4-inch midrange drivers. We mounted a set of GB60 mid-woofers in the door locations and a second set of GB10 tweeters and GB40 mids in the rear speaker locations.
JL Audio System Amplifiers and DSP Remote Control
We created a two-layer amp rack for the system’s JL Audio XD800/8v2, XD400/4v2 and HD750/1 amps and a Mosconi 8to12 Pro digital signal processor. The rack is bolted to the vehicle using 10-24 hex-head bolts and threaded inserts. We wrapped all the wiring to and from the amplifiers in automotive-grade Tesa fleece tape for a factory look.
Next, we created a custom mount in the center console of the Cayman for an RCD mini remote controller for the Mosconi DSP. The mount follows the lines of the center console buttons for an integrated look. The client can use the controller to adjust system presets and the subwoofer level.
We installed a new multimedia receiver that includes Apple CarPlay in the dash and added a backup camera to make maneuvering and parking the vehicle easier and safer.
Custom JL Audio Subwoofer System
We used ¾-inch MDF and ¾-inch clear acrylic to make a home for a single JL Audio 13TW5v2 subwoofer in the rear cargo area. The interior of the enclosure is finished in carbon-fiber textured vinyl and includes white LED lighting. The acrylic window is bordered by a machined ¼-inch aluminum trim ring and black and red vinyl accents. Finally, a suede-covered trim piece borders the carpeted panels that fit neatly against the hatch panels.
K40 Radar Detector Installation
Not satisfied with simply placing the K40 RLS2 radar detector on the window and plugging it into a power outlet, we concealed all the wiring and repurposed an unused location in the fuse panel and added the necessary hardware and a dedicated label for the K40.
Porsche Cayman Stereo System Upgrade
With the 11-channel audio system installed and tuned, it was time for the client to return to Adrenaline Autosound in Clayton to pick up the vehicle. The client was blown away by the system’s cosmetic integration and remarked that the music remained clear and detailed, even with the volume cranked.
