A customer from Raleigh, North Carolina, came to Adrenaline Autosound in Clayton looking for a 2016 Toyota Tundra sound quality installation. His goals were benchmark quality regarding tonal accuracy and a desire for his music to sound like it was coming from a virtual soundstage in the front of the truck. We discussed which products we could use and how we would install them. With a plan in place, we set forth on transforming his truck into a mobile sound studio.
Front Stage
We designed a simple system for this client that uses only five speakers. For midrange and high-frequency duties, we called upon a set of Audiofrog GS60 6-3/4-inch components. We mounted the midrange drivers on 1/2 inch-thick HDPE adapter plates that bolt into the factory 6×9 openings in the door. We use HDPE in all locations that could be exposed to water. It will never swell up or rot. ensuring the audio system will always sound excellent.
We treated the doors to a layer of Focal BAM sound-deadening material. This damping material blocks noise from outside the vehicle and helps to control resonances in the door.
We finished off the midrange installation with a set of foam coupling rings to ensure the speakers’ output would be channeled into the interior of the vehicle and not into the door. The client liked the look of the GS tweeters, so after a small modification, we mounted them in the factory sail panels. This pointed the tweeters toward the driver for optimum performance.
Back Seat
We chose a JL Audio 10TW3-D4 subwoofer for the system and created an enclosure for it that fit under the rear bench seat bottom. We included a JL Audio mesh grille to protect it while giving it a neat and tidy look. We also applied a layer of Focal BAM sound-deadening to the back wall of the truck to improve the comfort of the vehicle further.
In the center of the under-seat space, we installed a Gladen Audio RC 150c5 five-channel amplifier and a Mosconi 4to6DSP processor. The five-channel amp provides a dedicated power channel for each speaker in the system. The Mosconi processor gives us full control over all aspects of system configuration and tuning. We used it to delay the signal going to the speakers closest to the driver and adjust the level so the soundstage stretches evenly across the windshield.
Heads Up
The client chose a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX head unit for the truck. It provides both Apple Carplay and Android Auto support for safe and convenient communication with a smartphone while on the road. We also ran two pairs of JL Audio interconnects from the head unit to the processor. This allows the client to adjust the subwoofer output level using the control built into the radio.
With the installation complete, we fine-tuned the crossover and time-alignment settings with a thorough listening session. We used our RTA to measure the frequency response of the system and compensated for the vehicle acoustics with the equalizer in the processor. We wrapped things up by optimizing the gain controls on the amplifier for a perfect balance of output and reliability.
Toyota Tundra Sound Quality System is a Big Hit!
When the client returned to Adrenaline Autosound to pick up his truck, we could not get the smile off his face. He loved the sound of the audio system and couldn’t wait to take it for a drive.
