A client from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, contacted us here at Adrenaline Autosound to inquire about upgrading the audio system in his 2014 Ford F-250 Superduty. He was content with the navigation source unit in the truck but wanted to improve the way the system sounded. We discussed several solutions while developing a plan. With the choice of product and installation nailed down, we scheduled an appointment to do the work.
Front Speaker Upgrade
Our focus is to make the most of each component we install. Rather than using several pairs of mid-level speakers, we suggested a set of JL Audio C5-570 components for the front doors for this project. Nothing beats a good set of speakers. The new woofer from the set fits perfectly in the factory mounting location. We added a set of foam acoustic coupling rings to ensure as much energy as possible is transmitted to the vehicle and not wasted inside the door panel cavity. We mounted the tweeters from the set in the factory locations in the door’s sail panel.
We always run new speaker wire into doors to ensure that each and every speaker gets a good, clean signal with minimal power loss.
Amp Rack
We machined an amp rack for a JL Audio RD1000/5 amplifier out of 1/4-inch HDPE plastic. The amp rack straddles the mounting locations for the factory storage bin under the rear seats. We mounted the passive crossover networks from the JL Audio components beneath the amp.
The JL Audio RD1000/5 is a five-channel amplifier that is rated to produce 70 watts per channel for the main channels and 500 watts on the subwoofer channel.
We used a PAC Audio AP4-FD21 interface to extract an audio signal from the factory system. This interface replaces the factory amplifier and provides flat frequency response front, rear and subwoofer outputs to make adding the amp easy.
Subwoofer Solution
To provide good clean bass for the system, we installed a JL Audio CS110TG-TW3 Truck PowerWedge enclosure under the rear seat. This enclosure is home to a single JL Audio 10TW3-D4 subwoofer. The enclosure is nice and compact, thanks to its sealed design. If, for any reason, the client needs to remove the enclosure, we were sure to terminate the wiring to the enclosure with slightly different lengths so it would not short out.
Ford F-250 Audio System Delivery
The client was very impressed with the way the new system sounded. More volume, excellent detail and dramatically improved frequency response are just some of the things he mentioned.
