The owner of this 2019 Volkswagen Atlas visited Adrenaline Autosound in Clayton to discuss upgrading the stereo system in the vehicle. He already owned speakers and an amplifier, but wanted to tap into our expertise to ensure the upgrade would go as planned and deliver predictable results. After inspecting the vehicle and talking with the client about his performance expectations, we put together a plan that would deliver great sound.
SUV Door Speaker Upgrades
After removing the factory door speakers, we applied sound deadening to the outer door skins before we set to work running new speaker cable into the doors. Dedicated speaker wire is always part of our upgrade plan to ensure that the system is 100% reliable. We added a dedicated rubber boot to the doors to facilitate this upgrade.
We mounted a set of customer-supplied Kenwood speakers in the front door woofer and tweeter locations. We finished by adding sound deadening to the inner door skin as well as a set of foam acoustic coupling rings around the woofers. We also upgraded the back doors with a set of speakers provided by the client.
Volkswagen Stereo System Amplification and Signal Processing
We supplied a JL Audio TwK-88 digital signal processor and an RD900/5 five-channel amp to power the front speakers and the subwoofer. We connected the output of the factory audio system to the DSP and ran the output of that to the JL amp and a Cerwin-Vega amp the client supplied. The amplifiers, power distribution and signal processor are mounted to a two-sided circular amp rack that fits snugly into the round storage area under the rear cargo cover. The spare tire is still accessible without the need to disconnect any wiring.
We mounted a JL Audio DRC-205 remote control in the center control to give the client control over the subwoofer output level. The remote connects to the signal processor, and its function is defined in the tuning software.
The client chose a JL Audio High Output subwoofer enclosure to provide bass for the system. The enclosure is designed and built around a single 12-inch 12W6v3 subwoofer. The client can remove the subwoofer if he needs more storage space in the cargo area.
